✴︎ intimacy in black & white
CONTEXT
The genesis of intimacy. The only real things is a visual study into the nuanced intimacy shared between couples, a project born from both academic inquiry and personal reflection. My intent was to articulate the delicate architecture of human emotion through minimalist linework.
The project delves into the dynamics shared between couples, seeking to articulate the delicate, often unspoken, emotional landscapes that define their relationships. Informed by doctoral research and a personal quest for authenticity, the project aims to reveal the fragility and resilience inherent in human connection.
The foundations of this project are rooted in a detailed examination of lived experience. 50 volunteers, over a 2-year period, contributed to this exploration through in-depth interviews and questionnaires, providing a rich tapestry of personal narratives. These accounts, coupled with visual inspiration drawn from cinema, documentaries, and personal archives, form the bedrock of the project’s visual language.
CHALLENGE
Navigating the landscape of authenticity. In a world saturated with idealized portrayals of love and relationships, the challenge lies in capturing the authentic, unvarnished reality of human connection. The only real things confronts the difficulty of rendering the raw, unfiltered moments that define relational dynamics: the unspoken dialogues, the quiet vulnerabilities, the sincere, if not always idyllic, narratives of love. It seeks to capture the full spectrum of relational experience, from the serene moments of romance and tranquility to the turbulent undercurrents of doubt, compromise, and acceptance.
SOLUTION
Anatomy of intimacy: a study in linework. The only real things presents a visual exploration, a crafted language of lines to articulate the often-silent dialogues of intimacy. Each illustration, born from the raw data of lived experience, is a delicate study in reduction. I’ve stripped away the superfluous, focusing on the essential: the subtle shifts in posture, the fleeting expressions, the spaces between words, captured in the raw, almost tender, stroke of a liner.
This project isn’t about presenting a solution, but rather creating a space for reflection. It’s about crafting a visual vocabulary that allows us to see ourselves and others with a newfound clarity. The total of 150 illustrations, each a testament to the power of minimalist design, act as emotional cartographies, mapping the fragile terrain of human connection.
I’ve aimed to create a visual sanctuary, a place where the unspoken can be seen, where vulnerability is rendered with grace, and where the imperfections of love are celebrated as the very essence of its beauty. This is an invitation to connect, not just with the art, but with the shared human experience it reflects. It’s about offering a mirror, crafted with delicate lines and honest intent, so we might see the authentic selves we often choose to hide.
